Spread your wings!
We chat to Captain Jane Trembath, a commercial pilot for SAA!
Jane joined SAA in 1988, aged 23, entering a somewhat skeptical male environment. Since then she’s had many proud moments with ‘female firsts’ in South African aviation.
What type of person do you need to be to succeed as an airline pilot?
You need to be focused and responsible. You also need to enjoy technology, and have situational awareness and co-ordination. It’s only suitable if you have a true calling to be a pilot.
What do you enjoy most about your job?
The variety, the travel, the challenge. Every flight is different!
Any advice for teens wanting to follow this career?
It requires sacrifices and it takes time to get there, so be patient, be persistent and don’t give up.
Fewer than 10% of commercial pilots are women, and when I started I was one of only three in the country. The way to succeed is to believe in yourself.
Fast fact: In 2001 Jane was the Captain Commander of first South African all-female Boeing crew. Go girls!
