Uncle Freud said we forget because the dream contains repressed thoughts we shouldn’t remember anyway. Other research show we’re forward-thinkers by nature, so remembering something when we first wake up is difficult.

L. Strumpell, a dream researcher in Freud’s era, had another theory. He believed that we traditionally learn and remember by association and repetition. Because dreams are unique and somewhat vague, remembering them can be difficult. We can't go back to them to experience something again and therefore details that are out of our realm of experience, often escape us.
