Since he is our favourite dino bad guy, let’s find out what makes him tick…
Tyrannosaurus Rex is Latin for ‘tyrant lizard king’ (very appropriate!).
He had a 1.2 meter long jaw with 50 to 60 thick, bone-crunching teeth, each about the size of a big banana (One T-Rex was found with 33cm long teeth which enabled him to eat up to 230 kg of meat and bones in one bite!).
The T-Rex could also outrun David Beckham, according to recent research. Scientists used computer models to calculate the top speeds for five meat-eating dinosaurs and found that the T-Rex could muster speeds of almost 30kms per hour. Not too shabby seeing a top human sprinter can reach a speed of about 40kms per hour. Doesn’t leave non-Olympic gold medalists with much hope though, does it?!
Big, mean and fast with teeth as big as bananas and a ferocious appetite for meat. Boy, should we be grateful we can add extinct to this list!
