If you ask me to tell you about the best books I’ve ever read, then my next question is how long do you have? Books are my passion and reading is compulsory ... every day, 365 days. My current top 10 would look like this (this changes often, so next week I might have different books!)
- Perfume by Peter Süskind
What is it about smell that makes us who we are and to what lengths will you go for the perfect smell?
- Die swerfjare van Poppie Nongena by Elsa Joubert
An Afrikaans classic about the trails and tribulations of Poppie Nongena during the apartheid era in South Africa
- Everything and anything by Roald Dahl – there is always a twist in the end!
Everything written by Terry Pratchett, especially Mort (Death talks in capital letters!) and Witches abroad (I fell off my couch with laughter!)
- All the Harry Potter books by JK Rowling – the world of Hogwarts and magic is something you can never forget
- Lord of the Rings trilogy by JR Tolkien – more magic and fantasy but on an epic scale ...
- Captain Corelli’s Mandolin by Louis de Berniére – war, love, struggle, romance and a sad, sad end of affairs ...
- The other Boleyn girl by Phillipa Gregory ... Anne Boleyn had a sister Mary ... did you know that? If you loved the Tudors on TV you have to read these historic novels
- Helen of Troy by Margaret George ... the ultimate love story between Helen of Sparta and Paris ... Helen who is known as for “the face that launched a thousand ships” ... say no more!
- The book of lights by Chaim Potok ... a fascinating read about a Jewish boy and the unique lifestyle of orthodox Jews
The best thing about a list is to be able to have one ... it means you read and enjoy books. I dare you to start having lists!
