We’ve got this clever girl to thank for safety in our laboratories.

Laboratory

Kavita Shukla had two patents and her own company by the time she left high-school. It all started with the Smart Lid – a lab safety device for bottles containing hazardous material which is currently used worldwide.

Her second invention came after she drank contaminated water while visiting her grandmother in India. Her grandmother’s home remedy contained fenugreek seeds which prevented her from getting ill. This inspired Kavita to invent a packaging paper treated with fenugreek to preserve and protect food. She conducted experiments and saw that food wrapped in the fenugreek paper lasted 4-6 weeks longer than those wrapped in traditional paper.

As if Supergirl doesn’t already pale in comparison, Kavita is also the CEO of SAFEH20, a non-profit, student-run water testing company. They’ve already tested more than 450 residential water samples and alerted residents about problem such as excessive lead or other impurities. What a saint!
