Gauteng isn’t exactly my favourite province to visit. I have family in Pretoria and I’ll visit them maybe once a year but then I prefer the safety of their house rather than venturing out. This past week I had to venture. And I mean on the freeway!
Once again, I was teamed up with Hip’s features producer, Amanda, and I was the designated navigator. I knew that we were filming in various locations between Jo’burg and Pretoria so we’d need help in getting around. Travelling without my beloved mapbook, we discovered that driving anywhere was complicated. Luckily, we had a cameraman with GPS and we followed him where we could and, when we did find ourselves lost one morning, a kind elderly couple took us directly to our destination. The lessons I learnt from all this driving around is that, firstly, everything in Gauteng is far, far, far, far, far away, secondly, that people drive like maniacs and, thirdly, road courtesy just doesn’t exist if your car has a GP registration. No offence. Even I had to succumb to the maniacal driving otherwise we would’ve missed the flight home.
Anyway, the important thing is that we filmed some awesome inserts. We visited an air force base, met real fighter pilots including SA’s only female fighter pilot. We got to fly in a private jet, play on the brand new Nintendo Wii, hang out with pro gamers at rAge and met future science celebrities at the Eskom Expo for Young Scientists. Honestly, Amanda and I were exhausted after four long days of shooting, stressing and lots of driving but we’re very excited for the upcoming episodes where you can see exactly what we got up to.
