It’s one of those really hot days on the East Coast.  Hundreds of school girls and double the amount of parents shuffle into the school hall.  Sitting in the unventilated hall in their blazers, the girls start to get edgy as the speeches drag on.  This is speech day at St Mary’s DSG 2004 and I am in Grade 6.

This day I knew that I was going to receive an award for music as I had won the competition earlier on in the year.  This was extremely exciting because only the Grade 7s usually receive prizes.  What should have made me quite proud actually got me rather nervous.

I glanced across the row at my parents who give me one of those ‘good luck’ smiles and I faint right there on the spot.  Immediately my dad jumps into action, throws me over his shoulder and carries me out the hall with millions of staring pairs of eyes!  My real superhero =)

After I eventually recover my name is called out and I confidently receive my prize… It’s not so bad after all!
