... my piano, of course.
It’s not just there to be able to play everyday ... it’s the very idea that you can make that decision to play everyday and that you do have an instrument of joy in your home. And then heaven forbid that you “match” your piano with the rest of your furniture in your living room ... a black Steinway cannot become a purple Steinway just because your couch is purple or the curtains are purple ... please!
So, when I get back from work late afternoon or early evening, I open the lid, stroke the keys and depending on my mood choose which piece would delight me most. The other evening I was in the mood for Beethoven’s Moonlight Sonata, the first movement ...
It’s not always about the mood though. Sometimes it’s doing the hard work ... scales, arppeggios, all to keep the fingers nimble and exercised ... up and down, up and down, C major, C# major, D major and so it goes ... I love it!
Other times it is perfecting that song I’ve been working on for days ... the tune is in my head, but my fingers can make it go in so many directions ... major key or minor key, repeating motifs or not ... oh, so many choices!
But the best of all is always just playing to my heart’s content ...
