I would say that my favourite sense would have to be sight. We rely on it so much to get through our daily routine. We need it to see where we’re going, what we’re doing, and just to have a good quality of life. The closest we can get to realising how difficult life is without sight is with our beloved Eskom’s assistance! How many times have you been caught out in a power cut and had to fumble around blindly, tripping over various objects, such as books, furniture and pets? And that’s just to get a candle! Just imagine how life would be if it was like that all the time – a constant struggle to perform things that most people don’t even think about when they do them.
Furthermore, sight is really wonderful for making life that little bit more exciting! Without the ability to see, you’d be missing out in infinite little things, like:
- Seeing what your favourite band looks like
- Watching a sunset, with its amazing colours and tones
- Finding a dodgy facial feature on your worst teacher (e.g. big nose, monobrow, massive mole, etc.) that you can tease them about
- Seeing what heinous colour socks your Great-aunt Matilda sent you this Christmas
- Reading the latest Harry Potter book that everybody’s talking about
- Playing Pac-man with your friends at an arcade, and then blaming the machine for making you lose.
- Seeing what you step on. That doesn’t sound too great, but it’s not exactly my idea of a great afternoon having to come home and scrape random thumb-tacks, insect life and – er – things best left unsaid off my shoes.
- Watching that priceless expression on Patrick’s face when SpongeBob is trying to explain his latest scheme
So, apart from helping us to survive, eyesight really helps us in every other way, which is why I (or should I say “Eye”?) think it’s the best sense to have!
