You probably think I’d have a million sites to choose from, being an online-editor and sitting in front of a computer everyday from 9-5. In truth, I grow tired of the Internet very quickly. I’d much rather read a book (not an e-book!), have a chat with a friend (face to face - not facebook to facebook) or... well, anything else. Sorry, I sound like a Judas, right?! I just feel ‘experience’ is short-circuited when you’re mediating through a computer.
For example: When chatting to a friend on facebook, MSN, Skype, Gmail or MXit, you don’t see what they’re doing with their hands, you don’t actually hear them giggling at your joke...
When you’re reading an e-book, there’s no feeling of victory when you finish the last page or the pleasant smell when you stick your nose right in the middle of the book and take a big whiff...
In short, the online-experience is one-dimensional and a lot less fun. Or so I feel.
That being said, there’s no way to deny the Internet and I obviously also enjoy my good share of WILF-ing. I just feel we shouldn’t neglect the other important activities that could potentially fill our day.
One of my favourite sites is http://www.elleuk.com/. It’s not avant-garde as websites go, but it’s filled with interesting tidbits for those of you who really enjoy fashion. It has daily ‘Streetstyle’ updates, Celebrity trends, catwalk reports and new looks you’d want to try.
Another favourite is www.bookcrossing.com. This is one seriously cool site, based on an even cooler concept. At BookCrossing, you can register any book and then set the book free to travel the world and find new readers. After registration, you choose your location – a park bench, on a table at a coffee shop, at a hotel on vacation, anywhere… You then leave it there and register the location online. What happens next is up to fate – who knows who’ll pick it up, or read about it online and set out to find it? The exciting thing is you can track the book's journey around the world as it is passed on from person to person.
That's it. Till next time...
