Since early times people have been inventing stuff. Nowadays, there are so many new things that are being invented daily that it’s hard to keep track of everything. I have quite an interest in new technology, especially when it comes to things that I might be able to use, but don’t need (nice-to-haves). But my favourite invention must be the smartphone.

Although I don’t own one, I’ve had the chance to play around with a few smartphones. Smartphones are cellphones that have more advanced features and are (in most cases) more expensive (with the accent on expensive). I continue to be amazed by the range of tasks that can be accomplished with modern smartphones. While listening to music or internet radio, you can check your e-mail, visit your favourite news site, edit documents and stay in touch with others with VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) applications, such as Skype. The high-end smartphones also include GPS functionality, which can be used stand-alone, or with a computer to provide extended functionality. Security technology is improving at a tremendous pace, with a combination of features like fingerprint, voice and face recognition, and the old-school password authentication to secure your digital workspace.

Cellular connectivity is also becoming more readily available every day and the technology behind it is improving (take 3G and HSDPA as examples). I can see the realization of the dream of being “online everywhere” in the not too distant future – now wouldn’t that be nice
