Hi Hipsters

Have you ever found that the same amount of time can seem so varied in different situations? Just think of the hour you have to write a science cycle test (“hey, where did my hour go to?”) verses the hour of substitution you have to endure with no extra homework or anything for that matter to do (“could time pass any more slowly”)

Looking at how different time can seem only shows us just how easy it is to loose track of it. That is why I would have to say my favourite invention is the wrist watch. I mean, can you imagine what life would be like for more than 3 days at the most without that comforting round, rectangular or square, weird looking face on your wrist telling you where you stand in life. I can’t! I forgot to wear my watch to school once, just one day, and that experience was enough to make me seriously consider sticking the face of my watch to my wrist. I ended up scratching this idea after taking the time to draw a list of pros and cons. There were 20X more cons than pros (one pro, 20 cons).

Even though the invention of the wrist watch is fairly recent, (like 50 years man; it’s still a baby) mankind has always had an awareness of passing time. In fact, the use of a time keeping device can be dated back to 3 500 BC and we can safely say there were no batteries in existence that year. Ancient humans used the movement of the sun to track time with the help of the shadow stick and later the sundial.

Clocks came into existence in about the year 1500 after coiled springs started being used as a power source. But they don’t excite me, in fact they’re very little use unless you have them placed in every single room (as is the case in my house). Now watches… anywhere you go, anytime you need it, all you need do is lift up your wrist to find out how far into the day you are. The electric wristwatch was invented in 1957 after many improvements to older versions. Since then many improvements have been made to the watch so that we have what we have now. Today watches not only give you the time but can also tell you what day it is and what month and year you’re in, what the temperature is outside, and my dad has one that can even go so far as to keep you informed on what phase the moon is in.

Times are changing and things are improving. I mean, consider how far we have come since the hour glass or the sundial. Anyway, I expect nothing less from us humans. After all, as my mom always tells my sisters and me when we’re taking too long to complete homework, “Man, given sufficient time, can do anything.”
