When our very clever online editor, Nina, told us that we should write a blog under the heading “My Christmas wishlist”, it took me a few days to realise that the phrase could mean a few things. A Christmas wishlist could be a list of all the gifts you’d want this Christmas. It could also be a list of fantastic things you wish would happen this festive season. Being the slightly silly banana I am, my angle on the whole thing is that a Christmas wishlist should be exactly that: A list of things you wish for at Christmas.

Now, I realise I just said that the phrase could be interpreted as a list of things you wish would happen at Christmas. But I also said that my wishlist is a list of things one could wish for at Christmas which opens it up to anything and everything.

Therefore, my Christmas wishlist goes a little something like this:

  1. A Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren or an Aston Martin DB9. Let’s just say I like my cars fast and with a hefty price tag but, hey, luxury does cost a little bit extra. Who wouldn’t shell out a few million for a 6.0 litre V12 engine that comes with all the bells and whistles and is custom built to your specifications?
  2. Laws which ensure that everyone lives an eco-friendly lifestyle and does their bit to fight against global warming. I realise my wish for sports cars doesn’t quite go in line with this but it’s not like I’m going to drive the cars every day.
  3. A better public transport system. I envy people who live in countries where the public transport systems are safe, cheap, efficient and used by almost everyone, even late at night.
  4. A lifetime supply of Christian Louboutin, Jimmy Choo and Manolo Blahnik shoes!
  5. A holiday. I need a few days of rest and relaxation to recharge my batteries.
  6. A Christmas day that isn’t too hot. Last year, it was sweltering hot and the year before that it was very windy. Just once, it would be nice to have a windless, moderately warm Christmas day.
  7. No power outages or load shedding. Summer is the perfect time to save electricity so let’s all be energy efficient this Christmas please.
  8. Lots and lots of time to read. I can’t think of anything better than lying around reading books. Yes, I’m a geek and I love it!
  9. Being fit enough to get through my Muaythai classes. It’s still early days but, by the time Christmas comes along, I’ll be in my 6th week of classes and I want to be able to do all the sit-ups and push-ups without struggling.
  10. A safe and happy Christmas for everyone in the Hip2B2 family! That includes the viewers, magazine readers, website surfers, production people and the crazy folk behind the mag. It’s been an exciting year for all of us and it’s only fitting that we end of the year with a magical and exciting festive season.

While a Christmas wishlist might seem like a silly idea, it’s also a great way to open your mind up to a little bit of fun and excitement. Christmas tends to lose its sparkle as we get older simply because it’s stressful to go shopping for gifts, there’s just too many social invitations and perhaps we lose focus on what’s important at this time of year. While I do like my wishlist, the only thing I really wish for this year is a renewed spirit of wonderment. I want to laugh more this festive season, be more relaxed, work a little less and just enjoy the sunshine instead of fretting about the fact that I’m not supposed to be out in the sun in the first place. It’s not called the silly season for nothing and so, with my wishlist firmly in place, I’m off to have fun, chill out and enjoy this fantastic time of the year.
