If you believe that music can change people’s lives but you’re not necessarily cut out to be the next Bono or Bob Geldoff, music therapy could be the ideal job for you.
A music therapist provides restorative programmes through the creative use of music in a planned and controlled manner. Their patients are usually people with special needs because of social, emotional, psychiatric, physical or intellectual impairments.
You need to have a large repertoire of popular songs relevant to all age groups, and the ability to explore, interpret and develop the creative use of sound.
The University of Pretoria is the only university in South Africa that provides a music therapy course (done at Masters’ Level).
You’ll not only be a Bono but a Dr Bono!

- James Webb is a sound artist based in Cape Town...listen to some of his artworks. (He once created a soundtrack for a fashion show by recording the sounds of the clothes being made - scissors snipping, fabric tearing and machines sowing. He amplified and distorted these to create a few very unique tracks for the show.)
