We all want models, film stars and sports stars for partners. Why? Because they’re pretty of course! Science has shown that we tend to prefer symmetrical features and good skin. In women, people prefer a low waist-to hip ratio and someone that’s not too tall. In men: masculine faces, wealth and status. And neither sex likes glasses (Sorry Harry).

But these are all obvious things… What scientists also discovered was that smell appears to play a huge role. You are attracted to the smell of people who have different combinations of some immune system (MHC) genes to yourself. Partners with different MHC genes produce healthier children able to fight disease better (People with the same MHC gene actually prefer the same perfumes as well!).

In the animal kingdom it’s much easier though. There you just need to sing a complex song or do a showy display and you’re sorted. Lucky creatures…
