Hello all!

I hope that you are having a great holiday and continue to do so for the few remaining days.  I have had a fantastic time in England, with the general break from school providing me with plenty of time for R&R.
With prospects of a returning to school in a week, it’s probably time to convert the mind back into academic mode.

Something that’s really caught my attention recently is the astounding rate at which technology is evolving.  I have recently got a new cell-phone (yay) and this amazing phone (which is no larger than other popular models) has full GUI, turn-by-turn navigation GPS built into it.  GPS used to be a rather elite facility consisting of a rather large box and that needed to be attached to your car.  And by “used to” I mean up to a month or two ago.  But no longer! It is now simply included in the hardware of your cell-phone.

But this is not just a great novelty item.  Aside from allowing motorists to go anywhere without having to bother with irrelevant details like directions, it can also be a fantastic crime-fighting initiative.  A company called MLT Tech has made a really cool piece of technology allowing your car to send you an SMS telling you exactly where it is by listening to satellites all around South Africa (Cape Times Business Report, 10th Jan).  You can then take the co-ordinates that it sends, punch them into your GPS enabled cell-phone and find your car.  Now that’s innovation for you.  It’s good to know that my currently non-existent car (what with not being able to drive et al) is well protected.

Well, it’s off to the book shop for me to try and find some of the Gr11 books that I’ve been told I need.  The prospects of school aren’t so bad however, as the year starts off with a grade camp in Simon’s Town.  That ought to be loads of fun.

Cheers for now.
