Let’s save the best stuff for last and start with the stuff that makes me go “eeeuuuuwwww”. Okay so this is my weird side: I despise tomatoes and onions! I CANNOT eat them. I just find them…well, not tasty! I also don’t like egg-plant, which is strange since I supposedly ‘loved’ it as a baby. I also don’t eat pork and beef because it is forbidden in my religion. Um, there’s stuff like rabbit, cat, dog, brains, tongue and people…all of which I also don’t eat!!! LOL!  But the one thing that can really DESTROY a meal is cardamom (a.k.a. elachi)! If there is anything that could make even the most sophisticated of people gag, it is cardamom! It is absolutely disgusting. I’m pretty sure there isn’t a single person in the world who likes it – if there is, please tell me!!!

On a sweeter note, the foods that make me go “mmmm”: Hmmmm, sigh…so many choices! There are the usual favourites like macaroni and cheese and Debonairs’ chicken tikka pizza but I honestly think that nothing can beat the loving touch that comes with homemade food! My mum’s mutton curry and rice is absolutely divine and in my opinion, tasting this curry should feature on every person’s list of top 100 things to do before you die! Oh, and my aunt’s butter chicken curry with naan bread can only honestly be described as a mouth-watering, finger-licking, utterly delicious dish! Also, there isn’t much that can outshine the meals from a South African braaivleis. And that’s not even the dessert-y stuff!

Chocolate cake…ice-cream…waffles…the mere thought of it makes me hungry! But my FAVOURITE treat is without a doubt the Indian sweetmeat of Burfee! It is heavenly!!!! It melts in your mouth and is totally delectable! The best part is, because I can’t chew anything at the moment (I got braces on Monday and I’m having root canal treatment), I got my mum to buy me lots of burfee because it is soft and dissolves in your mouth (well, that was my excuse for getting it)!!! If you haven’t tried burfee before, here’s a recipe you can try, courtesy of Indian Cooking The Easy Way by Ramola Makan:

Ingredients:
500g  full cream
powdered milk
1 tin  Nestle cream (155g)
20ml ghee

Syrup:
625ml granulated sugar
375ml water
20ml  ghee
5ml rose essence
10ml  cardamom and nutmeg, finely ground

Method:
1.Mix powdered milk, cream and ghee together in a food processor until mixture
resembles fine bread crumbs.
2.Place water and sugar in a heavy based saucepan and cook until syrup reaches one
thread consistency. Add ghee, rose essence, and cardamom and nutmeg mixture.
3.Add prepared milk powder mixture and cook on a slow heat, stirring continuously
until mixture is thick – 15-20 minutes.
4.Pour mixture into a greased 23cm tray.
5.Allow to set.
6.Cut into squares. Refrigerate.

Yep! It may seem a bit long but believe me, it is TOTALLY worth it! “Mmmmmmmmm...”
