I know what you’re thinking, why frogs? Why make them fly – they seem to be busy enough already with metamorphosis and all.
A few Dutch and British decided otherwise and chose our green slimy friends for their water, proteins and organic molecule physique. These ingredients have one thing in common – they are all diamagnetic, which means that in the presence of a magnetic field they become weakly magnetised in such a way as to oppose the applied field.
So using their knowledge of diamagnetism and an actual powerful magnet, they succeeded in making Kermit float.
Scientists are now looking into this phenomenon to simulate zero gravity and thus provide a low-cost substitute for experiments now possible only in outer space.
(No frogs were harmed during this experiment.)
