You’ve probably recognised the word ‘audio’ in the title and know it refers to sound and hearing.

ear

An audiologist is someone who works with people who have hearing and related communication disorders. They employ various testing devices to determine the nature and extent of hearing loss in babies, children and adults.

After identifying the problem, they work to assist with the rehabilitation of both children and adults through the selection, fitting and provision of suitable hearing amplification systems (such as hearing aids) and other exercises.

They also work towards the conservation and prevention of hearing loss through auditory training, counselling, guidance and the provision and fitting of hearing protective devices such as noise plugs.

For those of you thinking about becoming one, you’ll need compassion, good communication skills and top notch analytical abilities. You’ll also need to glue yourself to those books – audiologists are professionally trained university graduates who has successfully completed at least four or five years of academic and clinical training.
