Whose brain would you like to pick with a quick chat over a nice cup of coffee?
My answer would definitely be Helen Keller, the inspirational political figure who became both blind and deaf whilst still an infant, yet lived an extraordinary life. I would be fascinated to see how she was able to interact with people, and I think it would be an inspiration to hear her story told by first account. I think she changed the world’s perception of what a ‘disability’ is and is proof that we can accomplish whatever we set our minds to.
Many people are never grateful for the impact that a teacher can have on your life. Annie Sullivan was Helen Keller’s teacher and one of the only people who believed that the girl had a future. She taught her how to understand our language and objects form our world, even though Helen had never heard a spoken word or seen anything. She refused to give up and her hope was the reason Helen Keller mad a success of her circumstances. She became the first blind deaf person to graduate university. That means no one has an excuse that they are not smart enough or good enough to go to university- Helen managed to with all that she had to cope with in life.
So to Helen Keller and all of those teachers who believe in you and I : thank you!
Cheers and hope you enjoyed the holidays:-)
