You all use it. You send each other werewolf bites, hatching eggs and cupcakes. You write on walls and send invites to parties. And major corporations are falling over themselves to buy it.

Mark Zuckerberg, a 22 year old Harvard whiz kid created the Facebook empire in just one week with the help of fellow student Andrew McCollum and roommates Dustin Moskovitz and Chris Hughes.

It all started as a simple networking system for university students. Harvard didn’t offer a student directory with photos and basic info (known at most schools as a face book) because of privacy issues. Zuckerberg decided to hack into the system and set up a temporary version called Facemash. Four hours, 450 visitors, and 22,000 photo views later, Harvard yanked Zuckerberg's Internet connection.

Bummer, right!? Not for this whiz kid - if you can’t beat the system, step outside it. Zuckerberg set up his own Facebook template and invited student to fill in their own information. Today, 55 million people choose to do this.

Thefacebook.com was launched on February 4, 2004.
