On the 23rd and 24th of June, Dirk Brand - a grade 11 student from Stellenberg High school - joined the HIP2B² magazine and digital team in our Cape Town offices as part of his job shadowing experience. Here’s what he thought about being worked to the ground... (Just kidding!)
My experience at HIP2B²
Wow, what an amazing couple of days! I never realised the world of media and publishing is such a fast-paced and exciting world. It was also very hard work. I can’t remember if I’ve ever longed for a lunch break so much.
I started everyday at 10 and finished at 4. Six hours didn’t seem so long at first, but it’s quite a long time. I didn’t even have to work a full day, but I was still very tired afterwards.
My day basically consisted of doing research about relevant topics for the HIP2B² website and also writing articles. I had several meetings with some of the staff, like the magazine team and the publisher.
The magazine side of HIP2B² was very interesting and I enjoyed seeing how the little magazine I see at school every few weeks, is put together. I think the art director’s job is the most hectic, because of all the effort that goes into the creation of the graphics for the magazine.
Overall, I consider my two days at HIP2B² very informative and it gave me a good vantage point in the world of corporate living. I’m thankful for the opportunity and would love to work there someday!
- We had a little Q&A session with Dirk. Here’s what he had to say about politics, his favourite inventor and life in general...
- Keep your eyes peeled - we'll be featuring Dirk's articles during the next few weeks.
