Not everyone wanting to work in the medical field wants to be a nurse or a doctor. There are other options and ways you can help others live long, healthy lives. Check out the following options:


HOSPITAL ADMINISTRATOR

Duties: Healthcare administrators direct and manage hospitals and other healthcare facilities. They are responsible for the day-to-day running of the hospital or clinic coordinating all the departments – personnel, financial, patient, material, etc.

What to study: In high school, you must have Maths, Sciences, Business and English as subjects. You will need to study for a University degree in Science, Health care, Finance or Business. In most cases, you will need to do a Master’s degree in Business Administration or Health Sciences.

Salary: Approx R35 000+ per month depending on experience.


MEDICAL REP

Duties: Medical sales representatives work closely with healthcare professionals to strategically increase the awareness and use of a company’s pharmaceutical and medical products. They are the key link that makes sure a client is aware of, buys and use the company’s products.

What to study: In high school, studying Maths, Sciences, Business and English as subjects will give you a good foundation. You will need to study for a degree/diploma in Sales, Marketing, Science, or Business.

Salary: R15 000 – R30 000 per month depending on experience.


DIETICIAN

Duties: Dieticians provide advice and education about nutrition and its affect on health. They work in schools, educational administration, research, hospitals, clinics, industry, food service management, and private practice.

What to study: In high school, studying Maths, Sciences, and Home Economics as subjects will give you a good foundation. You will need to study for a degree in Dietetics.

Salary: R15 000 – R22 000 per month depending on experience.


MEDIAL LAB TECHNICIAN

Duties: Medical laboratory technicians work with microscopes, chemicals, lab equipment and computers to perform laboratory procedures that will identify, diagnose, and treat diseases. They also collect blood specimens, prepare culture media and run tests.

What to study: In high school you must study Maths and Science. You will need to study for a degree/diploma in Science or Medical field. In most cases, you also get specialized in-house training.

Salary: R6 000 – R18 000 per month depending on experience.


RESEARCH SCIENTIST

Duties: Research Scientists work in research labs in many fields such as biochemistry, genetics, immunology, microbiology, marine biology, molecular biology, physics, or pathology doing research to improve knowledge on that field and find ways of improving lives.

What to study: In high school you need to study Maths and Sciences. You will also need to study for a degree in Science specializing in a specific field for Masters and in some cases a Doctorate degree.

Salary: R19 700 – R35 400 per month depending on experience.
