Food...from the future!

What did you have for breakfast yesterday? And lunch last Tuesday? Probably the same old things, right? Well, the future of food is going to be a bit different.

GM FOOD: Bananas that produce vaccines against disease, trees that yield fruit years ahead of schedule, nuts that don’t cause deadly allergic reactions… Although the technology is ethically dodgy (and possibly not sustainable), genetically modified foods are a big part of our dietary future.

FONIO: You’ve never heard of it but with climate change wreaking havoc on the world’s crops, the Smithsonian Institute predicts that it could be the secret to solving world hunger. Fonio (Digitaria exilis) is a tough type of grain that grows in poor soil, doesn’t need much water and is packed with nutrients – making it an ideal base for porridge, pasta and bread.

MAYBE NOT FISH: According to United Nations’ estimates, the global fishing industry will collapse by 2050 because of overfishing. To prevent that from happening, never eat fish that aren’t sustainable.
