5 awesome things that started out right here in South Africa…

The Peppadew
One day about 15 years ago, a farmer named Johan Steenkamp discovered an unusual bush while walking around in the garden of his Eastern Cape holiday home. The bush was about chest high, and it was covered with bright red fruit that looked like a miniature mixture of a pepper and a tomato. When he tasted the sweet, spicy flavour, he knew that he’d found something really special… and he certainly had. That fruit is now called the Peppadew and it’s sold all over the world!

Way back in 1965, an apple farmer and entrepreneur named Edmond Lombardi came up with a refreshing new fizzy apple drink in South Africa’s Elgin Valley. In 1966, he combined the words “apple” and “appetiser” to give the drink its now famous name: Appletiser. Today, the company has offices over the world, from the UK to the USA and even in Asia. But of course, the head office is still right here where it belongs, in Johannesburg…

The CAT scan
Sorry cat-lovers… this super-smart invention has nothing to do with your favourite furry friends. It actually stands for Computed Axial Tomography, and it’s a very special kind of medical technology that lets doctors create a clear map of a particular part of the human body. It’s used all over the world, but did you know that it was developed by a South African physicist named Allan Cormack, along with British engineer Godfrey Hounsfield? The invention was so impressive that the pair won the Nobel Prize in Physiology of Medicine in 1979.

The Kreepy Krawly
Next time you go for a swim in the pool, spare a thought for the Kreepy Krawly. Why? Not only because it keeps your pool so nice and clean, but because it was invented right here in Springs, SA by hydraulics engineer Ferdinand Chauvier. The first version was released in 1974, and it was made out of wood and rubber tubing.

Charlize Theron
Okay, so you probably know that this A-list actress was born in Benoni, Gauteng. But you might not know that she went to Putfontein Primary School, where the other kids made fun of her “nerdy glasses” and uncool hair and clothes. We’re guessing those bullies feel pretty stupid now that she’s an Oscar-winning actress in Hollywood…
